Goverment in Ancient Rome
Kings ruled ancient Rome at first, until an unfair and dishonest king called Tarquin the Proud was evicted from his position as king. He is known as the worst ruler in Rome's history. For the next 400 years, ancient Rome was a republic. The republic was ruled by a senate, and senators did different jobs in the senate. Only citizens of rome were allowed to vote. This excluded women, slaves and poor people.
Generals ruled over Rome but this caused many problems as they were always fighting over who should have the most power over Rome. Eventually generals no longer ruled and Rome became a dictatorship. Only one man ruled over rome - the Roman Emperor.
Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar was a very famous leader. He was trusted by all the people and because the Republic was having a lot of problems they needed a good leader. People were angry that the government couldn’t solve the problems but Julius Caesar promised he would. He became powerful and people in the Senate began to worry that he wanted to take over the government and become king. After Tarquin the Proud they vowed never to have a king again. They were right - Julius Caesar did want to take over Rome.
